If you aren’t a huge fan of coffee, you are on the search for your daily energy fix to get you through the day. And the latest alternative craze has been energy drinks. Yes, those carbonated energy bombs give you more pep in your step, but they are also eating your teeth, literally.

We all know sugar will rot your teeth, but recently focus has changed to the acidity in energy drinks. In a recent study, researchers found that teeth lost enamel with exposure to several kinds of drinks, but energy drinks took off a lot more enamel than other drinks. Another study found that energy drinks contain so much acid that they start destroying teeth after only five days of consistent use.

Because you are essentially bathing their teeth with acid, energy drinks caused twice as much damage to teeth as sports drinks. It is probably one of the most questionable gifts you get during this holiday season. Made with chopped candied or dried fruit, nuts and spices and sometimes soaked in “spirits,” fruitcake has been a holiday gift-giving tradition for many years. Some folks can’t deal with the Christmas season without it; some would rather never have a fruitcake enter their home. No matter how you look at it, on December 27th of each year, Americans across the country have the patriotic duty observe National Fruitcake Day. How did we inherit such a polarizing holiday delicacy?

Rome is believed to be the creator of fruitcake, as one of the earliest recipes known dates as far back as ancient Rome. This original recipe included pomegranate seeds, pine nuts and raisins mixed into barley mash. Records indicate that in the Middle Ages it changed slightly to include honey, spices, and preserved fruit, but it seems every country has their own take on the original recipe.

Sugar from the original American colonies, along with the discovery that high concentrations of sugar could preserve fruits, created an excess of candied fruit. Because of this large surplus, fruitcakes were now more affordable and much more popular in the 16th century.

  • Typically, American fruitcakes are rich in fruits and nuts.
  • In America, mail-order fruitcake began in 1913.
  • Commercial fruitcakes are often sold, from catalogs, by charities as a fundraising event.

Growing up, we are taught that the way to keeping your smile pretty is to brush and floss every day. In fact, we were told to go so far as to do it after EVERY MEAL. As a child, I found it to be incredibly difficult to keep up that promise, but a couple times a day was a bit more feasible with my mom’s constant reminders. What I didn’t know was that we are naturally given a tooth decaying weapon – saliva.

Yes, folks…the answer is already hanging out inside your mouth. See, tooth decay is something that happens when bacteria feeds off of the sugars we are consuming through food and drink. This plaque latches on to your teeth and begins to eat through the enamel on your teeth. Generally, we are under the impression that by brushing our teeth after every meal, there isn’t much time for this oral menace to do a whole lot of damage. But even more than that, when the saliva glands are activated in our mouths, it actually helps rinse off the bacteria naturally.

So what causes us to create this magical dental friend? Chewing. Every meal you eat, every snack you nosh on, every piece of bubble gum you chew is all helping to create the saliva that fights against germs and bad breath. But keep in mind, it takes 20 minutes for sugar to be cleared from your mouth after its consumption. The more often you are chewing on something sugary, the more often you are exposing your teeth to more bacteria, so try to keep these munching spurts less sugary and more healthy. Myth #1: Only older people develop sleep apnea.

Fact: Many people believe that only older people can get sleep apnea. This couldn’t be more wrong. This sleep disorder can actually affect people of all ages, this even includes children. While sleep apnea may be more common in people over 40 year’s old, it can also affect people of the ages 30, 25, 15 and sometimes even 5. There are some physical attributes that increase the risk of devolving sleep apnea, such as being overweight or male.

Myth #2: Everyone that snores has sleep apnea.

Fact: While snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea, it doesn’t mean that everyone who snores has it. However, it also doesn’t mean that those who don’t snore have sleep apnea. Those who suffer from sleep apnea pause their breathing while they’re sleeping, sometimes can even happen hundreds of times a night. This impacts the person’s overall health by disrupting their sleep cycle and decreasing sleep.

Myth #3: Sleep apnea is not a danger sleep disorder.

Fact: People seem to think sleep apnea is just snoring, but that is very untrue. Sleep apnea takes a toll on all those that suffer from it, it robs people of a good night’s sleep and the health benefits that sleep comes with, leaving them lethargic during the day.
